Kathmandu, Sept 28 –
Atletico Madrid produced a stunning performance to hand city rivals Real Madrid their first defeat of the season, thrashing them 5–2 in a thrilling Madrid Derby on Saturday night. The win marked the first time in nearly 75 years that Atletico scored five goals against Real in a single match.
The last time Atletico achieved such a feat was back in November 1950, when they beat Real 6–3. This latest triumph not only revived memories of that historic clash but also halted Real’s unbeaten start to the season.

A Match Full of Drama
Atletico drew first blood in the 14th minute through Robin Normand’s header. However, Real quickly responded, with Kylian Mbappe equalizing in the 25th minute and Arda Güler putting them ahead in the 36th.
Just before half-time, Alexander Sørloth struck in injury time to level the match 2–2, setting up an intense second half.
In the 51st minute, Julian Alvarez converted a penalty to restore Atletico’s lead before netting again with a brilliant free-kick in the 63rd minute, giving his side a commanding 4–2 advantage. Antoine Griezmann then sealed the result with a fifth goal in stoppage time, sparking jubilation among home fans.
Real’s Streak Ends
Real Madrid entered the derby on a perfect run, having won all six of their opening La Liga matches and defeating Marseille 2–1 in their Champions League opener. This heavy defeat, however, brought their momentum to a grinding halt.
The last time Real conceded five goals in a league match was in October 2018, when they were beaten 5–1 by Barcelona.
Atletico’s Dominance Continues
The result means Diego Simeone’s side remain unbeaten against Real Madrid in their last six La Liga encounters. Atletico’s sharp attack, disciplined defending, and the electric atmosphere at their home ground proved too much for their rivals.
With this emphatic victory, Atletico Madrid reaffirmed their status as fierce city rivals, proving once again that Real will never have it easy in the Madrid Derby.
