Sri Lankan young all-rounder Dunith Wellalage stunned spectators on Thursday night during the Asia Cup match against Afghanistan when he was hit for five sixes in a single over.
Batting first after winning the toss, Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi launched an aggressive assault in the final over of Wellalage’s spell. Nabi hammered five sixes off the young spinner, collecting 30 runs in that over. Wellalage finished his four-over spell with figures of 1 wicket for 49 runs.
However, the excitement of the match was overshadowed by a tragic personal loss. While Sri Lanka went on to secure a six-wicket victory, Wellalage was informed by Sri Lankan officials after the game that his father had passed away.
The 22-year-old immediately left the UAE upon receiving the devastating news. According to international media, Wellalage’s father suffered a heart attack during the match.
This incident highlights the fragile balance between the thrill of sports and the unpredictability of life. Wellalage’s impressive on-field performance, followed by his personal grief, made the moment even more emotional.
